The beloved hill town of Mussoorie holds a chilling past that has inspired many thrill-seekers, more specifically, paranormal enthusiasts, to pay the town a visit. Mussoorie, as pretty as it is, is without a doubt, one of the most popular hill stations in India. But this time we are not here to talk about the beauty of the hills and the vales, we are here to talk about the less-than-fortunate story of the Lambi Dehar Mines, allegedly one of the most haunted places in Mussoorie.

The story revolves around a tragic incident that occurred in the early 1990s. Back in the day, the Lambi Dehar Mine used to be a limestone mine where tens of thousands of workers worked. The working conditions at the Lambi Dehar Mine were none too great as it is when one unfortunate day, a catastrophic accident took place which took the lives of 50,000 workers.

It is said that due to unsafe working conditions, lack of proper ventilation, and inadequate safety measures, the mines caved in which resulted in trapping of the mine workers. They sure died a very painful death.

As per several sources, one can hear the painful cries of those mine workers to this day. There have been numerous instances where the locals and tourists have allegedly come across ghostly apparitions, unexplainable lights and eerie voices.

Following the tragic event, the mines were eventually abandoned.

Some have experienced and some wish to experience. Given the number of visitors visiting the now long-abandoned mines, it is safe to say that haunted or not, this site of tragedy does bring out the curious best in many of us.

For those curious, Lambi Dehar Mines is located approximately 10 km from the famous Mussoorie Mall Road. The place is incredibly scenic with pine trees all around and mist enveloping the area most of the time.

Paranormal sleuths aside, more-than-enthusiastic aficionados have also come up with a couple more angles to the haunting of the mines. Some believe the 50,000 dead workers, and some say the mines are haunted by the spirits of separated lovers and even a witch! We’ll never really know.
